I started out using GIMP exclusively until I "found" RAW and switched from JPEG and began experimenting with darktable, which I have been using for some time now.
In GIMP, the "Levels" module was very effective -- with one touch of the "AUTO" button you change a pretty poor image instantly into something very close to printable except unfortunately I found that it tended to blowout highlights.
In darktable, the AUTO button in the RGB Levels module doesn't seem to do much at all, and I have to select the individual RGB levels and manually manipulate each of them to get even close to what GIMP does without any manual input.
Question is, am I doing something wrong, or is the darktable Levels module just not that useful?
(I should say that many of my RAWs are pretty off-color because I am converting 50-year-old negatives to digital using Negadoctor and then further editing.)
