I have imported a folder hierarchy, with some images in the root folder. How can I select only the images in the root folder? By default Darktable shows the collection of images across the folder hierarchy.

I share the Darktable goal of not replicating the underlying filesystem but trivial functionality like this one, if not supported, can become a major adoption blocker. Windows, as example, offers this feature since the 1980s.

Of course you can There are many ways to select images in darktable. When you import a group of images, the images you imported are stored as a "film roll" as if you had imported a roll of film, and by default darktable assumes you want to view your images the same way you imported them so it gives you the film roll view . To change the view, go to the collection drop down on the left hand side you will see there is a plethora of options to select images and the top one is "Film Roll". Change this to "Folder". You will now see your Folders hierachy so you can now pick the folder you want to see the images.
But this is just the tip of the goodies you can use. You will see a box on the right of this drop fown (to put in a specific search) and next to that another drop down. Pick the "narrow down search" and you will have a second selection row displayed the same as the first. So now you can use the new drop down to select "say" ISO. This means in our example that you can now pick all images with a given ISO within a given folder. When you realise you can have as many selection rows (to add or subtract as well) as you want, you will soon realise that you can build up extremely complex selections if you wish, and these slelection parameters can be saved as presets to use again.
